Over de Auteur

Editor Charles Brooks is past president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and for thirty-six years was cartoonist for the Birmingham (Ala.) News before retiring last year. He is an award-winning cartoonist in his own right and has compiled a provocative collection of political toon meer and social commentaries in this fourteenth volume. Congressman Jack Kemp (Rep., N.Y.), often the subject of cartoons, offers a perceptive foreword, noting: "No one has ever seen a cartoon poking fun at Mikhail Gorbachev in Pravda or Krokodil, and that fact speaks volumes...." toon minder

This was one of my 50 cents (or possibly even free) books I got at one of the various book sales/book faires I attend. 1992 was an interesting year, in politics, economy, education, and just in-general. Things the the USSR breaking up, etc.

These anthologies are a wonderful way to remember the events of the year gone by. I had forgotten about them until I added this one to LibraryThing, but I've now added the volumes for 2001 to 2009 to my wish list at Amazon.

What strikes me quite a bit about a lot of the cartoons is that they didn’t last. I don’t expect editorial cartoons on issues from 1988 to have much relevance today. The other thing that struck me was how utterly non-subtle many of them are. By that I mean that they don’t make use of the visual element much at all. On the other hand, there are some really great cartoons as well. The 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning went to Berke Breathed for Bloom County.
