S. D. Broughton (1787–1837)

Broughton's a ghastly snob and his letters throw no light at all on what he was actually doing on the marches. However, for a window on a very backward, medieval Lisbon through to a highly cultured Paris, and a first-hand account of how welcomed the British troops were in France in 1812, and yet how surly and ungrateful the Spanish seemed by comparison, it's worth a dip into this book.
