Charles H. Brown, a 1952 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, began flying from carriers in 1955. His first tour as a naval aviator was in VC-35, the only night-attack unit in the Pacific Fleet at that time. During his twenty-three-year flying career, Brown also served with VX-5, a test and tactics toon meer development squadron, where he acted as project pilot and helped direct tests concerned with night and all-weather attack tactics and airplanes. He served as executive and commanding officer of the A-4 squadron VA-112 during the Vietnam War, participating in two deployments of combat flying. Brown retired from the U.S. Navy as a captain in 1973, but continued to work in aviation as an operations analyst with the U.S. Marine Corps and McDonnell Douglas Corporation.
