While there are a few strong pieces in this collection, such as Katrina L. Walters' essay, this particular anthology is jarring because of its focus on a mostly white audience. While the text is intended for social workers, and indeed social work in the U.S. may very well be white-dominated, one is struck by statements in this book such as this one from the forward by Laura Epstein: "The lesbian and gay American Indians described in this book are both American Indians and lesbians or gays."
