Summary:
What Happens When Rain Falls?, was written by Daphne Butler and was published in 1996. In this information book, Butler does a wonderful job of explaining the characteristics of rain. This book is illustrated with beautiful photographs that help to tell what happens when rain falls.

Personal Reaction:
As I read this book for the first time, I was impressed with the author’s ability to communicate scientific information precisely, but with great simplicity. Also, I was impressed with the selection of photos and how they so accurately accompanied the text.

Extensions:
1. A science teacher could use this book to introduce the rain cycle to students. A teacher could ask students question about rain. Then read this book to start the process of exploring answers to the questions asked.

2. After reading this book students can create instruments to measure rain fall. Cups can be used to create these instruments. Each child can add a measurement system to his or her cup and then add a personal touch by decorating it.

I love this book not only due to its graphics and wording but it makes the child think by asking questions such as How did you feel when stuck in traffic? Very few children books make them think at such a early age. This one is a keeper. Ages 5 and up
