The book tells that three goats try to get over the bridge to go eat on the hillside to get fat, and the biggest goat butted the troll who hides under the bridge and will not let them pass. I would use this book in my teaching, because the illustrations in this book are really good, and the story is really interesting for 1st readers to read.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff could be categorized as a "trickster tale" under the heading of folktale. For this reason, the story is an excellent example of a folktale when it comes to teaching types of stories in literature. The story is also simple and somewhat repetitive, so that is another teachable literature trait that can be taught.

I really liked reading this book. The first reason I liked reading this story was because of the illustrations. The goats were drawn with lots of detailed and looked exactly how the text described them. The facials that the goats made during the story obviously portrayed the emotions that the goats were feeling. Another reason that I liked this book was because of the plot. The plot was suspenseful throughout the whole story, I was not sure whether or not the goats were going to be able to get to the other side of the bridge without getting eaten by the troll who lived under it.The main theme of this book is that sometimes getting what you want/need can be hard, but it is worth it in the end. The billy goats needed to get to the other side of the bridge to get food, but they were scared of the troll. They decided to stand up to him and they made it to the other side of the bridge where they needed to be.

I enjoyed this book. First, I liked this book because it had repetition which will make it easy to read along with young readers. Next, I liked this book because it was about how the goats outsmarted the mean billy goat. They had to work together to overcome the mean bully. Lastly, this book will be great to read with a group of students because they can chime in with the repetitive phrases. In conclusion the main idea of this story is that if you work together you can achieve greatness.

As each of the three goats come to a bridge, they encounter a troll who wants to gobble them up. The first two get across the bridge by persuading the troll to wait for the next brother, who is much bigger. When the oldest goat arrives, the troll threatens to gobble him up, but he isn't afraid. He just uses his horns to ram the troll into the water. Then he crosses over the bridge to join his brothers on the other side, who are grazing in the meadow.
This is a wonderful folktale that will teach young children about trickery, bravery, and bullying.

In this book, the moral of the story is that good defeats evil. I enjoyed reading this book because it is a short story that incorporates the different elements of a story. There are different characters, a problem, a climax, and a solution. I loved how the Billy Goats crossed the bridge from youngest to oldest. When the younger one tried to cross the bridge with the troll, the Little Billy Goat Gruff said to eat his brother who is bigger than him. However, when the middle goat came, he said to eat the older goat. When the older goat came, he showed the troll that he had strength and courage. I loved the illustrations in this book as well. For the troll, the book drew him all hairy and dirty with flies surrounding him. For the goats, the illustrations really showed their emotions. When they crossed the bridge, their expression was scared but curious. When they made it across the bridge to the grass, their expression was happy and appreciative.

Summary:
The Three Billy Goats Gruff is about three billy goats all named Gruff. There was a small, medium, and big one. They lived in a valley with little grass so they wanted to cross the bridge to go up the hillside to a meadow with a lot of green grass and daises, but a mean ole troll lived under the bridge. The youngest and smallest billy goat went to cross the bridge first and the troll tried to eat him. The goat told the troll that a bigger goat would be coming next so the troll let the smallest billy goat by. The second billy goat came to cross the bridge next, and the same thing happened. The goat told the troll that a bigger goat would be coming next, so the troll let the second billy goat by. The oldest and biggest billy goat came to cross the bridge and the troll tried to eat him. The billy goat said no and pushed him into the water with his horns. Then all the billy goats got to enjoy the green grass altogether on the hillside.

Personal Reaction:
I thought it was a really cute book. I liked how it was told in the sequence way. It had the smallest, then the medium, then the biggest billy goat. I think children would really enjoy this story as well.

Classroom Extensions:
1. You could build a billy goat bridge out of toothpicks or other things.
2. You could make goat puppets and a troll and let the kids tell the story with the puppets.

Summary: Its a story of three goats that ate all their food, were still hungry and wanted more. Seen a meadow across the bridge, had to pass the ugly troll that lived under the bridge. Troll wanted to eat each one, but the goats always told him a bigger goat was coming, the last goat kicked him off the bridge into the water and went on across. They all ate until they couldn't eat no more.

Personal Reaction: This story was funny, because the goats were able to cross because they told the troll that there was a bigger goat coming, through them under the bridge so to speak.

Classroom Extension
1. Children could roll play and learn about be nice to others.
2. Learn different ways to solve problems, understanding conservation of food or other essential needs.

I enjoyed this book because it was relatable. It was funny because it is about animals wishing to eat human food, and it is relatable because it makes you want to eat that food! It connects the reader to the character because everyone likes French fries and pizza. Genre is fantasy fiction.

Summary:
In this story, these three goats wanted to find a better patch of grass to munch on. If they crossed the bridge all their problems of grass would be solve, but under the bridge lived a mean ugly troll. The smallest goat crosses first. When the troll tries to eat him, the goat persuades him to wait for the second billy goat, because he is much bigger. When the second billy goat is threatened to get eaten, he also persuades the troll to wait for the larger third billy goat. But when the third billy goat comes to the bridge the troll has his hands full. The third billy goat is so big he pushes the troll off the bridge and down into the river. The three billy goats all make it safely to their new valley of green grass.

Personal Reaction:
I love reading this book to my child, because I also read the classic story when I was little. It is fun to cheer for the goats and see the villain loss the battle at the end of the book. When you are reading traditional books you notice the repetition which I think is great for children. Even though the goat pushes the troll of the bridge, I love that the troll is outwitted instead of a giant fight seen. It shows you there are other ways to win a battle.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. Have your class put on a play and reenact the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.
2. Persuasive writing, have your students write a letter to the troll.
3. Show your class some different bridges. Have students build their own bridge out of gum drops, glue, toothpicks, and popsicle sticks.

I thought that this story was interesting for a couple of reasons. I really enjoyed looking at the illustrations throughout the text. The sky was a bright blue, yellow, and pink shade and you could see the detail and shadows behind the rocks in the green meadows. The three Billy goats, all by the name of Gruff, were three different colors: brown, black and white. The brown was the largest, black was medium size and the white was the smallest. These characters are well-developed and look quite friendly. The details in the troll were also magnificent. He had large pointy ears with a big round nose, with green skin and purple hair. The writing throughout the story was also very descriptive. For example, the author describes the troll that lives under the bridge to be ugly and mean. The language flowed throughout the story and was very clear. The pictures also helped to make the language clear, showing the mean and ugly troll that lives under the bridge. The big idea of this story is that if you put your minds together, you can overcome and problems that you have. Teamwork is the key!½

An excellent retelling of this classic folk tale. The illustrations provided by Stephen Carpenter are both colorful and wonderfully executed. Comedy and character are used to great effect in the images and the book is wonderful for reading out loud.

This is one of those texts that, as an English major, I think about from time to time in different ways. I imagine a close examination of this work in the fashion of the book Grendel by John Gardner and how perhaps it is the troll who is victim of the goats rather than a simple, two-dimensional villain. However, in the more traditional and child-appropriate reading this is an excellent book for young readers as it encourages using cunning and courage to face a bully. The illustrations by Carpenter are just delightful and I always enjoy reading this book to my son at bedtime.

Summary- Three billy goat brothers need to cross a bridge to get to food. There lives a mean troll under the bridge who won't let them pass. The first two trick him into not eating them and waiting for a bigger goat to eat. Finally the biggest goat comes and kicks the mean troll into the river.

Personal Reaction- I thought it was very smart of the first to goats to negotiate with the troll. They may not have been the biggest but since they couldn't use their size, they used their brains.

Extensions-
1) Have the children rewrite the story from the troll's point of view.
2) Then act out their story for the class.

This is a classic book about the Three Billy Goats trying to cross a bridge that is habited by a mean troll to get to the grass on the other side. I would definitely read this to my students when learning about folk tales and more traditional stories. I think this book has great pictures and has a moral outcome.

Summary:
Three goats must cross over a bridge in order to get to all the food. The bridge is guarded by a big mean troll, the goats out smart the troll by promising a bigger goat coming after them. When the biggest goat comes he's tough enough to knock the troll off who the washes down the river.

Personal reaction:
A very traditional story. I can clearly remember reading the story and repelling it over and over again with and to my parents, it was one of my favorites.

Class extensions:
Have them say the repeating "who's that tripping over my bridge" with you to get them involved and listening.

Allow students to act out the story as they remembered it after it's been read.

Discuss sizing of small, medium and large.

Summarize:
This book is about three billy goats who are all named Gruff. These three billy goats would like to eat at the nice green meadow but it is across the bridge over the river. There is only one problem; a troll lives under the bridge. The billy goats take turns going over the bridge and each one promises the troll that the next billy goat is much bigger and fatter. The last billy goat goes across the bridge only to be confronted by the troll. He then butts the troll with his horns and knocks him in the river. The three billy goats then enjoy the nice green meadow all to themselves.

personal reaction:
this is definitley my favorite story, it reminds me of me and my two sisters and how my oldest sister would stick up for me and my younger sister just like the biggest billy goat.

classroom extension:
1.for junior high it can be a way to talk about bullying
2. could put on a play with the entire class of the story

Summary:
This story is about three billy goats named gruff. All the three billy goats try to cross the bridge one at a time, but there is one problem. There is a troll under the bridgehead tries to gobble the first goat that crosses the bridge and the goat says wait till the second one comes he's bigger and then the second one crosses and says the same thing to the troll. Than the third goat comes by and scares the troll with his horns and hoofs and he pushes the troll off the bridge.

Personal reaction:
This story has been around for many years. Children love story's about animals and monsters so they get excited when teachers read them to them.

Classroom activities:
1. I would have print out templates of all the goats and troll and have them color them. Then we can make puppets out of the and have a puppet show.
2. Print out printable and have the children make mask out of them.

The was another spin on the tradional folk tale. The three billy goats Gruff wish to cross a bridge to eat grass on the other side. A nasty troll wants to eat them. They use the greed of the troll to convince him to wait for another larger goat to come along. When the last goat comes, the troll finds that he has bitten off more than he can chew (pun absolutely intended). Moral of the story? Don't be greedy. I like that the author doesn't outright state the moral of the story in this version. This leaves openings for discussion when reading this story in the younger grades. It could even be a great way to start introduce literature that comes with morals and then to have students eventually create their own short stories with morals.

I wasn't, personally, very excited about the illustrations, but I feel that younger readers will find them appealing. They are fun, cartoony and colorful. They add to the story and definitely will help independent readers develop a better understanding of what the words on the page are saying.
