A brief introduction to the policy governance model of governance. I've read his lengthier books, too, but this was a good review in preparation for a "Policy Governance Boot Camp" that I attended in Grand Rapids, Michigan, early in September.

Board difficulties, say John Carver, "are not a problem of people, but of
process. The problems lie squarely in our widely accepted approach to
governance, including its treatment of board job design, board-staff
relationships, the chief executive role, and virtually all aspects of the
board-management partnership".

From the dust jacket: "John Carver is internationally known as creator of the breakthrough in leadership called the Policy Governance model. He has worked with boards in the United States and Canada and on four other continents for over twenty-five years. His ideas have been featured by the National League of Cities, the Times of London, the Canadian Hospital Association. . .and many other [organizations]. Drs. Jeffrey L. Brudney and Thomas P. Holland, co-directors, The University of Georgia Institute for Nonprofit Organizations, Athens, said, "Dr. John Carver is internationally recognized as the leader in improving the governance of nonprofit organizations. His Policy Governance model has been adopted by numerous organizations on five continents. Widely considered the leading pioneer in conceptualization of the board-executive partnership, Dr. Carver offers a visionary yet practical approach to governance design that is truly transforming, powerful, and attainable." This work includes real-life examples of wording of policies for non-profit organizations and numerous citations for further reading with a comprehensive index.

Jannice Moore, president, The Governance Coach from Calgary, Canada, said of this book: "The guides are a great way to introduce busy board members to the basic principles of Policy Governance. Their bite-size approach is inviting, covering the entire model, albeit in less detail, without overwhelming the reader. They are succinct and easy to read, including practical points of application for board members. Consultants asked to recommend initial reading about the model can do no better than these guides."
