A second chance at first love? Why not? Cash has created an incredibly sweet novel about two widowers who get to rekindle their passion which began decades ago. Lovers of all ages will not be disappointed in this southern gem stuffed with unforgettable characters which promises room for a sequel.
Katie Wheatley is a widower who is just beginning to indulge in her new-found independence when she receives a phone call from her long lost high school sweeetheart who she hasn't seen or heard from in almost fifty years. Taylor Floyd is widowed also and is determined to capture Katie's heart once again. Reminiscing of the 1940's when they first met and swapping stories about their children and grandchildren occupy most of their time during their dates and exchanged phone calls. A trip to China and a mayoral election including a few other distractions utilizing Georgia and North Carolina as a backdrop are just some of the ingredients nestled in this dizzying concotion of a romance which never fizzled out. I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It was a cute love story and very interesting to see how grandparents can remarry and make two families mesh.

I truely enjoyed this story of first love that did not last, but was rekindled late in life after both people lost their spouses due to death.
Taylor and Katie were so very entertaining, as were their extended families. I really admired Katie's confident independent spirit. Traveling to China as a single senior citizen, (although with a tour group) showed her strength and secure sense of self. Taylor's decision to accept the request to run for Mayor with no political experience indicated his strong character and confidence.
I loved how Taylor stood by his friend Bobby without questioning his innocence or worrying about the possible negative effect on his campaign.
All of the characters are very well written and rounded out. The story of rekindling a love after 50 years is charming and realistic.
My only issue with the book is the ending felt too abrupt. In my opinion, there should have been at least one more chapter.
I've communicated my concern with the author. She will be writing more about this couple in the future. I eagerly await more of Taylor & Katie's story… (meer)
