A slim collection of short stories by some British Asian writers and a lady who was very talented but sadly died prematurely a few years ago. Very varied, ranging from those based on a Guyanese childhood - anyone interested in these should check out the author's full collection Once a Guyanese Child - to a schoolgirl tasked by her teacher to write authentically about British Asian culture - to a boy who has a delusion that a giant spider at the centre of the Earth is about to break out. One or two have inconclusive endings but maybe that is by design. On balance a 3-star rating.

Let's celebrate is a poetry book about different festivals around the world. The book shows poems about chinese new year, pancake day, carnivals, Holi, Easter, Christmas, and Hannuakah.

I enjoyed this book because of the illustrations, the writing style, and the language. The illustrations in the book were really well done and were helpful as they provided a glance as to how the game or sport being described was played. Everyone might not know how certain sports or games are played, so having the picture how it can be very helpful and informative. For example, not all children might know how to play cricket or what it looks like, so by having the picture of the children playing it and the equipment used, such as the bat and ball, children can have a better understanding of what the poem is talking about. In addition, I liked how this book was put together and the different writing styles used. Each poem had its own unique writing style as they all were from different authors from around the world. It was neat how all the poems weren't the same and had a certain flow to it that the others might not have. For example, some of the poems rhymed like "The World's Fastest Bicycle" as it used word pairs such as "seen and sheen, faster and blaster, and brake and make". Some of the poems flowed better than others, but all of them were fun and easy to read. In addition, the language used in the poems helped them to flow as the words would go together or sound nice when read. Plus, the language was very descriptive in most of the poems which lead to better and more colorful explanations or stories of people playing the sports and games. For example, the poem "Shot Put" talks about "the cold curve on the pulse in my neck", which is a very rich description of someone throwing a shot put. This adds to the poem and gives a good example of what it is like to play that sport or game and some of the emotions involved. The overall message of this book of poems is that there are a variety of different sports and games played around the world and that we should be accepting of all of them, and give them a try if possible.

Good anthology colorfully and cheerfully illustrated.

1.The book full of various poems on sports and games informs children about activities practiced around the world. The book of poetry, “Let’s Play!” educates students about the most important games and sports. I love this book for a ton of reasons. First, the book’s illustrations display water colors, colored pencils, and collages which keep readers engaged. The pictures on each page suit a younger audience by the way the illustrations are drawn. Specifically, the pictures look a lot like a younger child had drawn them. Second, I love how each poem is simple and to the point. For example, on one single page, the type of game is labeled on the top left corner. The example I am referring to is a Circle Game. Next, the type of Circle Game is portrayed in the middle of the page with the specific game in bold. The specific game is, “A-tisket A-tasket.” Below the bolded name, the poem is centered and simply explained in poetry. The poem about “A-tisket A-tasket” says, “A-tisket a-tasket a green and yellow basket, I sent a letter to my love, And on the way I dropped it.” Finally, right below where the poem ends, the game is labeled by the country it’s founded by. So, “A-tisket A-tasket” read, “Traditional circle game rhyme, USA.” Not only is the poetry enjoyable to read, the poems are informational for children. Third, the book about sports and games in poetry from around the world express rhythm and sound patterns. The words in each poem are drawn to relate to one another to teach readers about the specific games and sports. Also, the poems are written smoothly, and read fluidly. Fourth, the book of poems meets culturally diverse students. Not all the poems are about United States sports and games or just Chinese practices. Each poem includes the most popular and well liked games and sports from around the world.

This book is a collection of poems written by authors around the world. It is a great collection, including poems about many different holidays and traditions such as, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Pancake Day, Ice Festivals, Carnivals, Purium, St. Patricks Day, Holi, Baisakhi or Valsakhi, The Cherry Blossom Festival, Easter, La Tomatina, Thanksgiving, and many more! There are so many different cultures and religions included in this book, that no student will feel left out by reading about holidays that they don't celebrate because it is not specific to any one culture, religion, country, etc. This is a great text if you are not allowed to teach about specific holidays, but can read these generalized poems that represent each holiday without specifically calling it that holiday. The illustrations are done so uniquely in that they look like they are a combination of textured papers, paintings, and drawings/cartoons.
