Americans have long had a contradictory attitude towards tradition. We see ourselves as a fresh start in a new world without the detritus of Old Europe, but also as the inheritor of Greece, Rome, Jerusalem and the English Shires.

Clark explores the ways we navigated that tension between the Civil War and World War II. He looks at primarily Anglo-Catholic and proto-atheist thinkers - sticking solidly with the establishment.

Clark captures the nuance of the problem, but fails to organize the thoughts of those he examines into larger themes. In the end, the book works as a reference guide, but I'm not sure why Clark felt these ideas are important.… (meer)
