“The Little Red Hen Makes A Pizza” …Finding a jar of tomato sauce causes the Hen to make several trips to the grocery store. Before each trip she asks if Cat, Dog, or Duck will be willing to go. One by one they replied “not I” Prompting Hen to go herself. Eventually she finally has the bare essentials, and a lot of extras to make her Pizza. Once again she asks if the other animals would like to help, receiving the same replies she makes her pizza. As the smell began to escape the oven the other animals smelled the aroma in the air. This time when she asked if any one would like a slice; everyone replied yes. When asked who would do the dishes surprisingly they all did.… (meer)
While this story is much like the Red Riding Hood we all know. There is a huge and dark difference in this one. Evil wins and Red Riding Hood gets eaten. I wouldn't recommend this for a child but I like how this wasn't sugar coated at all. We all love to read about the happy endings but it isn't honest. A lot of times in real life there isn't a happy ending.
This is by far one of the best versions of Red Riding Hood seen in a long time, both in illustrations and text. No sugar-coated, happily ever after here, but instead a faithful rendering of the original cautionary tale. The illustrations are almost haunting and dramatically interpret the dark nature of the tale.
