NCLA Review -This Biblical story of the Apostle Paul’s conversion is narrated by a donkey. Not just any donkey, but the one specially selected by Saul of Tarsus to carry him on his quest to frighten and disgrace those Jews who claimed that Jesus of Nazareth was really the Messiah. As Saul travels, his faithful companion the donkey, tells of St. Stephen’s stoning death by Saul, Saul’s blinding by God’s wrath, and then his conversion to Christianity and his healing miracles done in Jesus’ name. Donkey explains that the Roman version of Saul is Paul and after he converts the Roman Emperor, he is called Paul. This retelling is surprisingly detailed since it is told by a donkey. Illustrator Payton Carmichael drew most all of the characters alike, so it is hard to distinguish Paul from the others. The font is small and difficult to read. Ages 6-9. Rating: 2 —MMW… (meer)
