It's 1815 and an Inquiry Agent - Mr. Knighton Gaunt - is employed at a house party to expose a spiritualist - Miss Prudence Barnard - as a fraud.
Unfortunately murder happens to prevent this. Can Mr Gaunt discover the murderer while unearthing all the guests secrets before they strike again.
This is the first of a series which I look forward to reading the next.

With very little involvement of the Second Sons Inquiry Agency it is left to Lord Castlemoor to find the evidence that his uncle - Sir Edward - did not kill his lady friend - Lady Banks. It would seem a game is being played out with the arrival of roses just before a murder occurs. How many more roses will be sent until the guilty culprit is discovered.
Enjoyed the story and like the characters, wondering now with the third in the series whether there will be more of the Inquiry Agency or a lone detective.

1821. Injured Captain Nicholas Ainsley, needs an occupation to help him cope with his nightmares from the war. He is finally offered the position of an Inquiry Agent, and after time spent in paperwork he is given the case of the murder of an Earl.
An interesting and well-written historical mystery, with a very likeable Captain, and with a hint of romance.

Elspeth with her mother and aunt are attending a house party at Chiswick Hall, owned by their neighbour Charles Chiswick. Unfortunately he is soon killed. Elspeth is determined to uncover the killer.
Didn't really take to Elspeth and I did determine the killer. But still an enjoyable read.

In 1818 London, the Duke of Peckham is hounded by the ladies of the ton for his title. Then he is introduced to Charlotte Hayward, American heiress. This mystery cum a little romance involves several murders.
On the whole an enjoyable story but with some over-the-top moments - i.e. how to ladies constantly manage to hide in his bed chamber to be compromised when he has a house full of servants.

I didn't realise this was the fourth book in a series until I started reading it. The story began in the middle of a conversation and I had to go back to the start to make sure some pages weren't missing. As a teenager, I loved books set in Regent times, Georgette Heyer and Barbara Cartland being my favourite authors at the time, but from the start "A Stolen Rose" never appealed to me.

I loathed Albert Comstock with his hot, pigheaded temper and Anemone's name grated on me. The romance between her and the Earl of Wraybury happened far too quickly and was too under-developed to be believable. Suffice to say, I won't be bothering with any other books by this author.

Grace Stainton has received terrible news: the young curate she has been in love with is engaged to be married. She sets off to convince him of her love and that they deserve a chance at happiness, but when she arrives, he is dead. With suspicion falling on her, can she find real love and prove her innocence?

In the previous story in the trilogy, Grace annoyed me with her treatment of her sister so I wasn't eager to return to her in this story. I did respect her decision to remind the curate of their love. Lord Glanville is convinced she is at fault and is grateful his sister has been saved a marriage to the now dead man.

The mystery was the most interesting thing about the story. I was kept guessing, although once I was done I could see how the clues were laid out. It would have been nice to see more of the romance between these two since most of the time they spend together is passed over in a sentence or paragraph.

I would recommend this to readers who enjoy romance with a pinch of mystery. I received a copy from the author for reviewing purposes.

At the unexpected death of her father, Martha Stainton resigns herself leaving the life she has always known and her closest friend, Lord Ashbourne. When he comes to her with a mystery to solve, she promises to help him one last time. But will love win out in the end?

Martha, who was not the oldest of the three sisters, had my sympathy from the start. She was not a beauty, she relies on spectacles to not squint everywhere she goes, and she had a skill for chemistry. She was practical and intelligent. Even when jealousy tinged her thoughts, she approached things with straightforward logic.

Lord Ashbourne, of a more lively disposition, was the perfect foil for Martha. He has his own worries: he has an estate, but no money to make improvements. He is barely able to care for himself. His reasoning on matters was more instinct than based on facts. That made me worry whether he would be able to care for a wife and the inevitable children.

A lovely start to a trilogy, and one I would recommend to readers looking for a sweet story with a mystery. I received a copy from the author for reviewing purposes.

Hannah is on her way to London when her ship goes down. She makes it to shore, only to discover a horrifying fact: wreckers are making sure no one survives. This determined young woman manages to reach the road, but she's not safe yet.

I found this to be an interesting novel. From the moment the ship goes down at the start of the novel, we follow Hannah as she does everything to prove who she is. The sense of danger lingers throughout the story.

Adam Blackwold could have been an amazing hero. I liked how easily he could go from being put together, formal, to being unkempt. And he didn't care. However, beyond that, he wasn't very memorable.

Overall, this was a unique Regency story, even if the romance felt lacking. I would recommend it to any Regency reader looking for a fun read.

I received a copy from the author and am reviewing of my own free accord.½

Solid 4

Characters were likeable and storyline was unusual. Plot twists were unexpectedly pleasant and loose ends were tied up nicely. Clean. Will be looking for more from this author.

Hugh Castle, the Earl of Monnow, is out on his boat with his brother when it sinks in a storm, taking his brother with it.
When he gets to shore, Hugh discovers the boat had been sabotaged so he goes to the Second Sons Inquiry Agency to have them assist him to look into who would have wanted to kill him. He keeps his survival to himself.
At the same time a young woman needs to sneak back to a Hugh's home to try to find a missing necklace she lost at a party there before her sister, or any of the rest of her family, discovers she's lost it.
As is usual in these novels, the two characters meet and muddy up the waters with their separate inquiries.
A fun read.

This novel is set in Regency England.
A private inquiry agent has been hired to expose a so called medium as a fraud. The medium, Prudence Barnard, is a young woman living by her wits with no money or family to support her.
In the middle of a séance, the Lord who was wanting to expose her is killed, leaving Prudence the obvious murderer.
The agent, at first suspecting Prudence, discovers that there were any number of people with reason to kill the victim.
And, as is usual in Regency novels, there is a certain attraction developing between the two main characters.
Light, enjoyable read.

This is another book in the "Second Son Inquiry Agency" series.
A young girl successfully disguises herself as a man and works as a bricklayer, becoming an integral part of her employer's business.
They come to London to do some work and she's contacted by someone from her past. The person is killed and she hires someone to look into it.
This book is rather annoying as "Sam" constantly puts herself unnecessarily into danger for no good reason and the situations she gets into are just plain silly.
Not wonderful.

A quaint historical whodunit that had me guessing right up until the culprit was unmasked. Very Agatha Christie. Mystery and suspense readers that like the classics will thoroughly enjoy The Dead Man's View.

I read these as mysteries, not romances. As a mystery they are pretty good. This is the second featuring the two principal characters and it did drag a little when they were not sparring - but I am sure that is something that will be overcome when (hopefully) the next with these characters comes out. There are others in the series with different characters which are on my to read list.

Despite a few typos, I found this novel thoroughly entertaining. Charlotte is both witty and strong-willed, while Nathaniel is stubborn and quick-tempered. Although the story is a bit dark at times because of the unfortunate events that seem to follow Nathaniel, there are also many humorous moments. In addition, you do not have to read the previous novel to understand this one. I highly recommend this novel to fans of mystery and romance and intend to read the rest of the series!½

All the fun of a who done it with the bubbles of romance added for fun. An engaging read that keeps you guessing until the end. I truly enjoyed the fact that the female lead wasn't a shrinking violet nor a winsome lass on a mission to save the man of her dreams.

I received this from Library Thing to read and review. This is a well written historical mystery. Pru is single, what they referred to in her time as a spinster. She attends a house party given by her cousin Eric Knibbs. When Eric is found dead, hanging outside his window, Pru sets off to figure out how and why he really died. In her efforts, she is aided by an old friend, Knighton Gaunt of the Second Sons Inquiry Agency. As the two delve in to this mystery seeking the truth, they discover the secrets of the household and Eric, leading them down many, intriguing paths. One thing that also develops is a strong relationship between Pru and Knighton, which evolves into a romance and attraction neither had figured on. The author has written a great tale of intrigue and mystery, set in a long ago historical period, filled with historical charm of the Regency era. Though I normally do not enjoy reading historical romances, I enjoyed watching how this plot unfolded and how the relationship developed between main characters. This is a great stand-alone novel, although, if you enjoy this, you would also enjoy the other books in this series.

A cozy and romantic historical mystery with great characters and a plot that pulls the reader in and doesn't let go until the end. I could not put this book down! The writing flows well, the two MCs are smart, and the story unfolds like a mixture of Clue, Downton Abbey, and Midsomer Murders set during the Regency period. Although I suggest reading the prior books in this series as well as any others with some of the same characters, you can read this novel as a stand-alone.

This historical romance/mystery is delightful, witty, and full of suspense! The characters are smart and likeable, from the MCs to the supporting characters. One of my favorites is John Archer, who is similar to many of Jane Austen's matchmaking characters. The female lead is strong and intelligent without being obnoxious and the Duke is downright comical at times in his avoidance of persistent ladies. Absolutely adorable novel!
