Korte biografie
In addition to their published books, the Cunningtons made a major contribution to the study of fashion history through amassing their dress collection. Put together at a time when almost no one was collecting old garments, let alone late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century middle-class clothing, the Cunningtons’ collection has since become one of the most renowned in Britain. They sold it to Manchester City Council in 1947 to form the basis of the Museum of Costume at Platt Hall.

Picture books of what people wore are valuable for photo historians in terms of tentative information about places and dates. Additionally, of course, they interest fashion designers and cultural historians. Alison Gernsheim, who was so much help for Helmut in preserving and presenting the history of photography was an expert in this field and wrote her own book on the subject.

As a costume designer, I greatly appreciate this book. The costumes of the upper classes are abundantly researched, but the aspects of the lower classes are often either ignored or glossed over. This book gives specific historical references and explanations of job distinctions for the various costume periods. A valuable reference.
