Wondrous Depth: Preaching the Old Testament door ELLEN F. DAVIS

I picked up this book because it is the result of Dr. Davis' Beecher Lectures at Yale Divinity School. This book is well written (like most serious Anglican academics), highly accessible and was overall very informing. The two lengthy sermons, one by John Donne and one by Lancelot Andrewes were a bear to read but interesting.

I especially like Davis' proposal of using the Psalms in preaching and how the Psalms can and do illustrate the emotive side of many New Testament texts.

The last section of the book contains four sermons by Davis; the third sermon, based on Psalm 1 and on the topic of prayer is one of the best sermons I have ever read. i am going to copy it and place it at the beginning of the Psalms.

I also appreciated gleaning a few Anglican gems.… (meer)
