A lot of fun!!

Oddly enough I have little knowledge of Lovecraft or Cthulhu, but toss Buffy on anything and I'm on it.

That being said, I really enjoyed this, even if I was confused in the beginning.

Longer review to come!

A Carton of Hate and a Wedge of Spite. 'Nuff said.

It started off funny but then just got really, really stupid. Obviously I´m not the target audience for this.

Possibly surpassing the regular series in excitement and likable doggos, this Beasts of Burden spin-off adventure is a gory treat for the goodest bois.

Returning to this world of boop-able snoots and a surfeit of gore, Beasts of Burden manages a fine balance with humor, emotion, and beautifully rendered art.

Loved this graphic novel-very imaginative, with appealing characters. I'd recommend to animal lovers and horror lovers alike.

Violent, rage filled, profane, raunchy, cynical, misanthropic and aggressively hard hitting. I enjoy every bit of it. It takes a certain kind of person to appreciate that kind of dark humor this comic strip is built on, so I'm glad to be one. I started reading their antics back in the mid 2000s, so I've been a fan for years. No one is safe and nothing is sacred from Milk and Cheese. Presidents, celebrities, products and religious groups- you name it, they get walloped with insults.

Has potential to be great. Moved kind of slow but the creepy factor was there. With only 4 issues you would think the first would have more details. So far we know nothing but that Blackwood is haunted, the town is weird, and that these college students were delinquents.

Interesting read but I won't be reading the remaining series.

Okay, I lied in my last review on the 1st issue. I said I wasn't going to read further. My friend let me read the issue so I figured why not. I enjoyed the artwork, the concept of the college being for the occult, and the kids each having a background in dealing with the supernatural. Besides that I didn't care for the actual plot (don't know what it is) or the characters themselves. If my friend has the 3rd issue I'll read it, but as far as me buying it? Nah not worth the money.

It's been a few years since I last read a Beasts of Burden book, and I believe I have missed a few other adventures in between, but this one stands alone as it is mostly a flashback to a solo adventure of Emrys the Old English Sheepdog in 1947 occupied Japan. The conceit of the series is that there are intelligent dogs who can do magic and act as monster hunters, mostly in secret from the normal humans around them.

I was bored as Emrys just wandered around teaming up with an American stray dog and meeting up with some Japanese dogs who also fight monsters. Emrys would occasionally fight some Japanese demons and spirits, mostly casting a flame spell at them as he slowly worked his way toward the big bad and the final confrontation. It was all pretty straightforward, with the only thing to distinguish it being the creators driving home again and again, "Hey look, we're in Japan and these are Japanese monsters!" Maybe they were able to write off some vacation expenses?

I got this, but I was told I shouldn't read it. Animal stories always depress the hell out of me. So I'll save my copy for some day when maybe I'm not so... sensitive...

I stumbled on this in our local comic store yesterday and fell in love. Have read the thing twice through since then despite being busy with other things. Spunky teenage girl fights monsters, but rather than being the one who is destined to fight monsters like Buffy, she is the one who is destined to become a monster but is fighting back hard. Really cute art, lots of action. I want more and it's driving me nuts that I need to wait until I'm not sure when for there to be more.

It's really too bad that there is only one volume of this series, because it has quite a bit of potential to be a great magical adventure. Dorkin and Thompson's canine companions (and one cat, aptly named Orphan) are absolutely charming in their typical doggy behaviour, which is neatly contrasted by their near-human intelligence when it comes to protecting their neighbourhood from malevolent magical forces. It might not be the smartest magical story ever, or even the best comic about dogs, but somehow it just works!

It has been a very long time since I've been utterly blown away by a graphic novel. Dorkin and Thompson have successfully combined The Incredible Journey with Buffy the Vampire Slayer with this graphic novel. Charming, emotional, exciting and wildly creative, I HIGHLY recommend this book and hope to see more adventures of these characters soon.

Small-town, Calvin and Hobbes-esque setting meets talking dogs (and a cat, The Orphan) who solve paranormal activities. I could not get enough of this.

This was not good. Thin characters and erratic storyline. A real bummer considering how fantastic the author's "Beasts of Burden" series.

I could see this being a good gateway for young teens who are graduating from Archie but not quite ready for Hellboy.

Nope nada had to stop reading it. Something about it I didn't like, I think the bloody creatures did me in. The graphics are great besides that but the creatures were too much and I couldn't continue on.

For reasons that I can't fully fathom, I was immediately enamored with the images of Milk and Cheese. Was it the boxy heads or face filling features or the almost always in motion over-sized feet and hands. Maybe. But I suspect it really was the greasepaint Groucho eyebrows appropriately borrowed from the original menace of mayhem--unless you count Attila The Hun. There is really little point to all this but to wreak havoc--quite literal and visceral physical destruction--while being self referential and breaking the fourth wall but it is very amusing for awhile. Best read in small doses or enjoyed as originally published individually in various comic collections where they would benefit from clearly standing out from everything else around it. While each comic skewers a different subject, too often it is "second verse, same as the first". I almost always enjoyed them and suspect I would have enjoyed them more had I stumbled across them in the 80's when they originally debuted. Of course, I could never truly bad mouth anything that references Merv Griffin, lawn darts and catching Monk at the Pussycat Lounge. And of course beating up a record store clerk at least in part because he'd never heard of Nat King Cole didn't hurt either.

This book was hard to stomach at times, especially for one such as myself who has a sensitive constitution. There are A LOT of dead, maimed, drowned, zombie, etc. animals within these pages. But the story was just so good. It was funny, serious, poignant, foreboding, and creepy. Each character had a distinct personality. And the artwork by Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother) is amazing; it manages to be both cute and gruesome, often in the same panel.

Also, it has witch cats.

I loved these stories when they first came out in the 90s, and I'm glad to see that the over-the-top, mean-spirited humor still holds up. This stuff is fun because it is so, so nasty.

Everyone’s favorite Duo of Dairy Destruction are back in House of Fun #0, a collection of Evan Dorkin’s House of Fun comics originally serialized in Dark Horse Presents #10-12 in 2012. Milk & Cheese make several appearances, as do the Eltingville Club, and there’s even another episode of that hit sitcom The Murder Family. The spaces between these headliners are filled with dozens of Dorkin’s three-panel comic strips such as Broken Robot, The Man Upstairs, and Myron the Living Voodoo Doll. Dorkin’s brand of humor is dark, brutal, and oppressively pessimistic, and as I’m sure Milk & Cheese fans would agree, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

** I received an e-advance reader copy of this book through Edelweiss **

Fun, fast-paced and intriguing re-interpretation of the Cthulhu mythos! I loved the illustrations and loved the characters. There wasn't much character build-up or background yet but I suspect that will come later, as in many graphic novels. This would be a great introduction to Lovecraftian horror for younger or more visual readers. Can't wait for the next issue!

Really beautiful art. The writing is a bit slight and rushed; it may appeal to young adults.

Beasts of Burden tells the adventures of a band of dogs and one cat dealing with exoteric menaces happening in their neighborhood. Evan Dorkin text is very good, but the star is Jill Thompson with her watercolors and realistic, detailed art.½
