from Preface

This preface was meant for Book 1 but unfortunately could not be included in time for publication and has therefore been put into Book 2. It is an attempt to put into English the concept and aspirations of Professor Kenji Tomiki 9th Dan, the founder and originator of the Tomiki Aikido system.

In Japan, jiu-jitsu is a broadly used term to mean the application fo self-defence techniques against an enemy who may be armed. The techniques are therefore designed to injure or kill and as such there are many variations to cope with different attack situations. This is fine in periods of constant fighting where there is no law for protection. However, the use of such violent means of self-defence is now not allowed generally in society where there is a police force to keep the peace, In order not to lose the mental, physical and character-building benefits that such training also produces, modernisation of the various techniques has been attempted so that these marital arts can be incorporated into education and sport safely and without injury to an opponent. Such has happened successfully in the case of Kendo (sword fencing) and Judo (grappling) which have become very popular. In the case of Tomiki Aikido, with a history of only 20 years compared with Judo's100 years, it is a much more difficult proposition owing to the techniques being much more dangerous i.e. those parts of jiu-jitsu left out of the Judo selection modernisation programme due to their danger. Professor Tomiki, one of the top students of Professor Morihei Uyeshiba, the founder of aikido, is trying to modernise Aikido along the lines of Judo and Kendo so that it can be safely incorporated into education and sport and therefore can become beneficial for more people. Although it has only been in existence for 20 years, Tomiki Aiklido is rapidly improving and spreading outside Japan and has provided a very exciting aspect of such a potentially good self-defense system. No self-defense system can really be tested except in reality, and if sports competition provides the means of testing this maximaly without injury, then I hope you will agree it is worth taking up. Of course, the Tomiki Aikido system is not designed just for the young and strong but for all people of all ages and all builds, hence there are 2 ways taught and practised side by side, the traditional way through the various Kata forms and the modern way through sport competition.
