This is a fascinating book about the soldier who was carrying no identification and was found dead after the battle clutching a picture of his three children. So much popular sympathy about the fatherless children was aroused by this sad story that an enormous search was undertaken to identify them by publishing the picture in newspapers across the country. The man was eventually identified as Amos Humiston, whose pre-war life as a whaler is detailed as well as what became of his children and widow after the war.
