Very good historical fiction for children, or for anyone who wants to learn more about a less-well known aspect of the American Revolution. I didn't know that many slaves were able to earn their freedom by being apprentices, or that children of slaves could play freely in public, or that, at one point, it was thought (at least in what is now Charleston) that the war was over.... Gives a richer picture of the life at the time than many other more dramatic stories.

Yes, the plot of this one is about a dramatic act, but overall the tone of the book is quiet. Like the cover. I rescued this third hand - it had been a couple of local elementary schools but appears to have never been read, as the interior is so clean & very tight. Too bad. Just goes to show, art that appeals to adults is not necessarily the same as illustrations that appeal to children.
