Elizabeth, Countess of Fingall (1865–1944)

Elizabeth Mary Margaret Burke, known as Daisy, was born in Moycullen, a small village outside Galway, Ireland. She was raised mainly in Dublin and was fluent in French and a keen horsewoman. In 1883, at age 17, she married Arthur James Francis Plunkett, 11th Earl of Fingall, with whom she had four children. As Countess of Fingall, she was a member of Victorian high society -- King Edward VII referred to her as that "jolly little lady." Lady Fingall was active in numerous union, charitable and cultural groups, and was an advocate of women's right to vote. Her memoirs, Seventy Years Young, first published in 1937, provide an entertaining look at people and events of late Victorian and Edwardian Ireland.
