This one surprised me. I Keep My True Love in the Basement/Remix begins as a full on detective noir, with the big influences being the stylised hyper worlds of Hong Kong cinema and the harder cyberpunk areas of anime. Intrigue is created from the outset as a woman is murdered and the investigation into her killing uncovers some unusual leads. Early on the book concentrates on the affectionately strained relationship between the buddy detectives, which is competently done but familiar territory. Thankfully the novel then expands to be a loving reflection of genre, with gleefully described action and death scenes, nefarious corporations, threats of double-cross and betrayal, technological anxiety and Becky Trickle. Yes, Becky Trickle - the coolest name, but I suppose I’m half biased.

There’s great movement about two thirds into the novel, where the focus suddenly shifts. I found this worked really well, as up until this point I had had an idea of where it was going. This redirection created renewed momentum just when needed, and refreshed the story. The novel starts off with a somewhat traditional view of female representation for this genre but there’s a slow turnaround throughout the novel that is skilfully done.

The horror elements worked very well, body horror fusing with cyberpunk splatter, and the more existential concerns of identity and perception of self are portrayed with dread and poignancy. The writing is especially successful in creating scenes of suspense and tension, which is very fun.

An entertaining love letter to action Japan and all its colourful lights and rainy alleyways lit up in strobe. Great for immersion in that world and fans of this universe will feel right at home.
