Interesting book, you definitely do not need to be verbal to communicate. I’m always on the lookout for books that can be considered inclusive but are not designed as such. Non-speaking communication still communicates in this book.

I have a soft spot for books about little boys with big imaginations. This is a good one with charming black and white illustrations of a little boy leading a parade through the forest. I enjoyed the memory of playing Drop- The- Handkerchief with my grandmother and her friends 40+ years ago.

A personal account of the life of Rosa Cavalleri (aka Ines Cassettari) 1866-1943, an Italian American immigrant. The story is in her words, as recorded by Marie Hall Ets. Definitely worth reading if you are interested in Italian Americans and the life they left, and the life they led in the US. The story is honest and unique, and it is hard to read it without getting mad at those that mistreated her.

Published over 30 years ago, Nine Days to Christmas remains fresh and relevant. Ceci's first Christmas posada party and pinata have made her Mexican town come alive for generations of readers. "The youngest child will be completely transported by this lovely story".--The Atlantic. Three-color illustrations. (GoodReads)

Description: Out in a meadow, a little girl just wants to play, but the animals keep running away. Then, she sits still by the pond, and they all come back to her. Teaching patience and gentleness this classic story is wonderful for children of all ages.

Just Me is about a little boy who mimics the movements of different animals he finds outside his home. But when he needs to run to catch up with his father, he runs just like himself – no need to imitate anyone else.
The illustrations are all black and white charcoal drawings. The lack of color and dark background around the subject on each page draw the eye to the little boy whose movements and expressions are authentic and endearing.

Reds, pinks, and oranges burst forth from the pages in this beautifully illustrated book. A little girl in Mexico can't wait for her first Posada, especially the pinata. But then she becomes sad when she realizes that someone will break the beautiful pinata. This would be a great book to teach about Mexican culture and how they celebrate Las Posadas.

This book is an amazing book to teach children about a different culture. By reading this book I've learned about a Mexican girl who was extremely excited to host her first posada, which we would call a Christmas party in America. I believe this book was quit long to engage younger children for so long, but by me learning as I read I was fascinated by the culture. Although the illustrations weren't as thrilling because the lack of color and typical pencil sketchy style, overall it was a good read.

This book presents a very different type of Christmas story. It describes the tradition of Cesi's experience in Mexico. She is receiving her first piñada for Posadas, which are Christmas parties that take place eight days before Christmas. It is a very long story and would take lots of patience for K-3 children to sit down and read/listen to it in one sitting. Personally, I do not think the art is very interesting. It is drawn with pencil in a sketch-like style and very little color. Each page is filled with lots of design, clearly expressing the text, and it conveys the story well. I just do not think that children will find it very interesting.½

Awarded a Caldecott Medal in 1960, this lovely Christmas tale from co-authors Marie Hall Ets and Aurora Labastida follows the story of young Ceci, a Mexican girl who is excited to learn that she is to host her very first posada, or Christmas party. Full of eager anticipation, Ceci has many exciting experiences in the days leading up to the big party, culminating in accompanying her mother to the market to select a pinata. When the posada finally comes however, Ceci isn't sure how she feels about her lovely star pinata being broken apart...

Although Ets was an established children's author in the 1950s and 60s, and wrote and illustrated a number of picture-books, her co-author, Aurora Labastida, who was a librarian at the U.S. embassy in Mexico City during the period, only ever worked on this one book. Apparently it was partially written to counteract some of the more stereotypical depictions on Mexican people abroad in American children's books at the time. Although I am not in a position to judge how well the authors succeeded in that goal, Nine Days to Christmas does feel authentic and respectful to me, depicting a then contemporary child and her many daily activities with sensitivity and affection. The artwork, appropriately enough, given that this won the Caldecott Medal, is lovely. I particularly liked the nighttime scenes, with the glowing candles. Recommended to anyone looking for Christmas stories for younger children with a Mexican cultural setting.

I think that this is a good book to have. We have talked so much about windows and mirrors and the way minorities are reflected in literature and how that in turn effects the kids and the way they see themselves. I want to strive to have the most representative classroom library that I can.

This book informs you of a different culture through vocabulary and traditions such as the posada-Christmas party. Ceci is finally old enough for this party and is excited about picking the pinata at the Mexican market. The setting is established diversely from the beginning to the end. The emotions are well portrayed, for example, the shock factor of cold bath water is shown on Ceci's face in the illustration. Societies grouping and family orientating mechanisms are apparent. The use of Spanish in the signs at market attend to the diversity of the book. The colorful mom and daughter on the black and white background contribute to the mother-daughter connection. The personification of the pinata can be seen through the playful pictures that contribute to the fate of her choosing. She sees a star pinata, like the star that the wise men used to find baby Jesus, and the star is shinning at this moment. The pictures show the expressions of the people while they sang and followed their religious traditions. The hiding behind the tree illustration makes you feel empathy of her sadness that her pinata was being destroyed by the kids, this appears as the problem and then the solution of the star sky shinning and staying alive forever is the solution. This resolution of giving the world a star, for Christmas, changes our emotions and we can see it changes Ceci's feelings in the picture. This book can teach children about the Mexican culture from a child's viewpoint.½

From looking at the cover I thought this book would not have any words in it, but instead only pictures. The book takes you on a journey of reading things through actions. The sketches and brief text show feelings without actually using words. It shows the many gestures that readers may also make in everyday life. The book teaches gestures to express happiness, love, and disgust and teaches readers how to convey feelings without actually talking. We understand what people are saying by paying attention to their body language.½

Nine Days to Christmas won the Caldecott Medal. This story is about Christmas traditions in Mexico. It explains the story of a young girl named ceci and her family and the Posadas. The nine nights before Christmas, every single night, her family and friends go to different houses to celebrate by singing songs, eating meals with anyone who joins them in the home. Ceci is excited because this is her first year being included in the Posadas and she gets to pick a piñata. She picks a beautiful golden star and when the children come to her house to celebrate, she is upset that they are hitting it. Just as she is about to cry, she hears a real star whisper to her that it will always be safe in the sky and it will always be shining for her. I really enjoyed this book because I learned a great deal of another Christmas tradition. It is way different than what I do every Christmas so I learned a lot. I never heard of Posadas before until this book. I think it's a great book to read to children so they can learn different cultures and traditions. The illustrations are really pretty.
