Dazzling writing animates this powerful memoir in ways that leave me 1) deeply satisfied as a reader and 2) confounded as a writer. How does Ford unfold her story with so much power and grace? I listened to her read her own story and could not stop!

3.5 rounded up. This was beautifully written and funny and painful and interesting. Ford has a strong voice and she somehow managed to write about incredible trauma with clarity and introspection.

It felt incomplete though. I appreciate that the characters are revealed to us as the author experiences them, but they ended up flat and one-dimensional as a result. For example, it was mind blowing to me that she casually mentioned her mom was a correctional officer, a profession very often linked to brutality, without any connection to her mother’s volatility and abuse. I really wanted Ford to examine the motives of the women and men in her life. I was also left feeling frustrated by the passive conclusion. Excellent. It doesn’t get any better than this. Ashley C. Ford’s voice is very much her own and still I felt I related to her feelings so many times despite having very different backgrounds. Some of the best writing I’ve seen in a while. Highly recommend.

Ford’s deeply honest and intimate memoir is beautifully written. She had a rough childhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but never lost her passion for life. From abuse to a father in prison, her journey hasn’t been easy. I personally loved all the references to my home state and my alma mater, Ball State University.
