Desmond Ford (1929–2019)

Although this book is a bit sprawling, and has almost more quotes from other sources than Ford's own words, it is still well worth reading if you are looking for ways to reconcile science with the book of Genesis. Ford's main thesis is that the Genesis account was never intended to be a scientific account of how God created the universe and the earth, so that trying to defend any particular interpretation of Genesis from science is inappropriate, especially so when the bulk of science runs counter to the interpretation. Essentially, the Bible and nature are God's two revelations to mankind, and we must accept both. To do that in light of modern scientific findings, which are very robust in their interpretation of earth's natural history, requires some alternate ways of interpreting Genesis, if Genesis is to be accepted as truth.

In summation, Ford rejects Darwinism, which he defines as a purely materialistic model for the origin and evolution of life on earth, in favor of progressive creationism, in which God created life in the deep past and has been gradually adding to that creation by creative events throughout earth history. At the same time, Ford shows how the Fall, salvation and the Sabbath are still just as supported by the Genesis story.… (meer)
