The book, “I’ll See You When the Moon is Full” by Susi Gregg Fowler is an exceptional fictional science book that includes the phases of the moon. The characters in the story are a dad and his son, Abe. Dad is getting ready to go out of town for two weeks. The son is dreading his father leaving and is already starting to miss him. Abe wants to know how long two weeks will be. Dad explains to him that he will be home when the moon is full. The story starts with the moon as a sliver, or a crescent moon. The father demonstrates the phases of the moon for his son and tells him the moon will “grow” each night until it is full. He asks his son while he is gone to draw the moon he sees in the sky until he returns home.
I love how this story presents a type of coping mechanism that some children could practice in their own homes if they have a parent that has to travel frequently. This could become a great class project, also, to have students keep their own observation journals of the moon for two weeks, and then compare with one another their drawings.… (meer)
