- Korte biografie
- Empress Eugénie was born in Granada, the daughter of a Spanish nobleman who had fought on the French side during the Napoleonic Wars. She was educated by governesses and at a convent school in Paris. There she met Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, president of the Second Republic. They married in 1853 after he had seized power as Emperor Napoleon III.
She played an active role in political affairs, supporting Papal causes and opposing a Prussian candidate for the vacant Spanish throne, a controversy that helped spark the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. After France lost the Battle of Sedan, she fled with her family to exile in England, where she lived on for many years, a grande dame of European monarchy.
