Fuller was a close personal friend of Garfield, having met in the early 1850s at what is now Hiram College. He provides a perspective on the growth and development of Garfield from college days until his death in 1881.

Many letters from Garfield to Fuller are included in full.

Fuller also covers his life as it evolved over the years. I especially liked his coverage of his years in Washington during the period that included the assassination of President Lincoln.
