Good book. The octopus is a bit of a jerk, but by owning up to his mistakes, learns that he has much more to offer to himself and to others.

This is a really cute story about a little fish with too much energy. He is driving his mom crazy, so she sends him out into the open sea to swim off some of his energy. While out there he sees many creatures and has lots of adventures. The artwork in this book is so colorful and silly it makes the book even more enjoyable.

In my opinion this is a good book. I liked how the author’s language was patterned when describing Tiddler’s adventure through the sea. For example, Galloway wrote, “He wriggled and squiggled, he darted and giggled…He dived and he flipped, he leapt and he dipped.” I also liked the characterization in this story because Tiddler and his mother were believable characters. The mother was “fed up” with Tiddler so she told him to “go out into the sea and swim till you’re tired, but watch out for the Big Fish” Tiddler’s mom wanted to make sure he was safe while he was out which is believable because most mothers would do the same. Tiddler’s character was believable because he is young and didn’t listen to his mother. He swam right into the Big Fish’s mouth. This is realistic because many children are not as careful as they should be and don’t always listen to their parents. Overall, the big idea of this story is that you should listen to your parents. This is evident when Tiddler swims into the Big Fishes mouth and gets scared. His mother told him to be careful and to watch out for the fish, but he did not listen.

I love using this book to introduce the concept of how we fidget and the many words we use to express ourselves! Fun watching students practice the fidget!

This is a great book to read to children when they think that they are only good at one thing. Then they can try different things and see that they are good at other things just like the octopus.

Smiley Shark lives in an ocean with tons of other fishes. Unfortunately no other fish wants to play with him because of his big smile and teeth. Smiley often gets sad because he wants the other fish to play because they enjoy doing some of the same activities that he does. When the fish get caught in a fisherman's net Smiley Shark saves this with his big smile. The other fish are amazed because they thought Smiley Shark was mean because of his big teeth. After he frees them from the net, they all play together because they realize that he is not mean. The other fish judged Smiley Shark because of his appearance without any evidence that he was mean , but because of his teeth. After playing together the other fish realized that Smiley was just like them.

A story about finding what you're good at and learning self-esteem. Crab believes he is clumsy with his claws and that they get in the way of everything he does including playing hide and seek, toss the bubble and tag. HIs friends though allow him to be the seeker in hide and seek and clumsy Crab learns that his claws are more than just clumsy and that he is able to save the day when Octopus gets stuck in the seaweed. A cute story with fun illustrations that would be good for young readers to talk about the differences in everyone that still makes them unique and special and about how friends should accept each other for who they are.

Yawn Like a Hippo is a fun book for preschool age children. The book has colorful pictures and cute rhymes for each animal on each page. The book also has flaps children can lift to see the animals. I would strongly encourage preschool teachers to read this book with their students.

Ten Shiny Snails is a counting book with rhyme and a bit of repetition. The story takes place in a forest where ten snails are playing at night. One by one each get distracted, leaving the group until one snail is left. This lone snail goes and looks for his friends and when they reunite there are ten snails at the end. The snails are tactile and protrude from the right side pages making it easier to count. There are also cut-out holes in the left pages that correspond with the number of snails that remain. However, the book's illustrations are bright and busy and at times compete with the colors of the snails. This could make if confusing for a child when counting. The book does count downwards making it a bit more challenging.

Age Appropriate: 2 to 6 years old

Galloway, R. (2010). Ten shiny snails. New York: Scholastic.

Ten Shiny Snails and Counting Butterflies in Cahuilla share the same purpose as a counting book, however these books have differences. First, the illustrations use different medias. Patienco uses soft lines and muted colors (in watercolors) to depict the butterflies making these 2-dimensional images uncluttered. Also, the images do not fully cover the pages. Galloway uses the full page and bright colors mixed with tactile snails. This books is eye catching, but filled with images. Counting Butterflies in Cahuilla counts up from 1, while Ten Shiny Snails is the reserve. Moreover, Ten Shiny Snails has a story line that rhymes, unlike the other picture book that is strictly counting with image association. Both books have number recognition and counting as a focus, yet the presentation of this theme is quite different.
