Another of those sort of books with extremely important subject matter that is ruined by the execution. The European creative team turns the human suffering originating in Myanmar/Burma from the 1980s to the present into a melodramatic fiction drowning in purple prose and soap opera plot developments. It seems presumptuous of the French author, no matter how much time she has spent doing research in the region, to write in a narrative voice that uses "we" throughout the book as she speaks for the Zo people; it blurs the line between the work being educational and exploitative.

Also, I had trouble understanding the passage of time throughout the book, with horrible and bloody events seeming to constantly follow immediately one upon the next while somehow decades keep passing until we find the whole book has covered over 25 years.

Une très bonne BD autobiographique de Lilian Thuram, librement inspirée de son essai "Mes étoiles noires, de Lucy à Barack Obama". Scénarisée par Jean-Christophe Camus, dessin de Sam Garcia.
De son enfance en Guadeloupe jusqu'à son arrivée en France avec ses frères et soeurs, l'histoire retrace le parcours de Lilian Thuram qui découvre la métropole, et fait la rencontre d'un vieil homme dans sa cité des Fougères près de Fontainebleau, qui lui raconte les réçits du passé colonial de la Guadeloupe et permet au jeune Lilian de découvrir tout un pan de l'histoire qu'il ignorait jusque là et qui lui ouvre les yeux sur la réalité du racisme, de l'injustice créée par une longue histoire coloniale qui a amené les blancs à se croire supérieur à tous les autres peuples.
Une belle approche de tolérance, qui encourage à se libérer de nos conditionnements en en prenant conscience plutot que de perpétrer indéfiniment des attitudes de rejets, dans un sens comme dans un autre.… (meer)
