Northampton Market Square is the largest in England and was praised by Daniel Defoe upon visiting the town. The book is written by Fred Golby who was a Market Trader for forty years. This is the story of an important part of the Town from medieval times to recent years. Fred,who was a well-known personality in market life for many years has recently died,aged 95. There are one or two howlers in the text,such as calling a shop Preedes instead of Preedy's and describing Drum Lane as Drumhead Lane,however the overall impression is of a valuable addition to the literature of the Town of Northampton. The illustrations are particularly well chosen,with scenes from 1880-1883 and 1910-1920 and then into the 1950's and 1960's.
