Northampton Market Square is the largest in England and was praised by Daniel Defoe upon visiting the town.
The book is written by Fred Golby who was a Market Trader for forty years. This is the story of an important part of the Town from medieval times to recent years. Fred, who was a well-known personality in market life for many years has recently died, aged 95.
There are one or two howlers in the text, such as calling a shop Preedes instead of Preedy's and describing Drum Lane as Drumhead Lane, however the overall impression is of a valuable addition to the literature of the Town of Northampton.
The illustrations are particularly well chosen, with scenes from 1880-1883 and 1910-1920 and then into the 1950's and 1960's.
He ends with extracts from historic works on the Town including items from ' The Records of The Borough of Northampton' 1898.
