Written as a story, "Performance Breakthrough" by Mike Goldman is an interesting read. The author’s direct, fast-paced writing style keeps the story’s action moving and quickly gets to the core of the book’s management lessons. Goldman’s emphasis is on the practical. Don’t expect much explanation of the theoretical rationale for the performance recommendations Goldman provides. You don’t have to take his lessons completely on faith, however. He does provide case studies illustrating real-life applications of the recommended actions. Another helpful aspect of the book is the chapter summaries. Here Goldman provides more specific information on how to apply the performance-enhancement steps he introduces through the story’s narrative. Those well versed in effective management practices will not find anything new in the book. Managers in need of a quick tutorial for improving team performance are the readers most likely to appreciate this fast and informative read.
