Frank Grace

Fascinating account of this Ipswich haberdasher who was a puritan, and parliament supporter in the Civil War but who was disillusioned by the venality of some Parliamentarians and by the abandonment of the principles of Liberty and democracy. He later became a Quaker and was imprisoned for refusing to take oaths.

A charming book about a poor part of Ipswich UK which was so run down it was demolished in the 30's. It was built up quite rapidly in the middle of the 19th century but was badly built and occupied by local unskilled workers. Grace has been able to track many of the occupants through their tragic or disreputable lives, and it makes a marvelous illustration of the life of the urban poor in Victorian England.
