3.5/5 stars

This book opens with a completely unnecessary yet totally awesome prologue in which we get to know the world and the characters with a special guest appearance by Mayor Corey Booker, vampire slayer. Yes, you read that right. If you think I was not drawing sparkly hearts and smiley faces all over this book when I read that then you don't know me at all.

As you can imagine, I was prepared to adore this book after that opening. Although the rest of it never matched up to that level of cheesey goodness, this book still turned out to be pretty great. It's basically an average urban fantasy, but there's something about it--probably Greco's writing style--that makes it jump just that little bit into a cut above for me. (Those of you who are in fandom: I wonder if Greco is or is at least fandom-adjacent, because her book has that sort of vibe.)

Nina is a vampire. Kind of. Half. Her dad was a vampire and her mom was a witch. Something happened that triggered Nina's witch genes and now her body is battling itself. But she doesn't have time to dwell on that because a lot of people are being murdered in her town, a vampire attacked her in the bar she owns with her witch aunt, and a hot FBI agent that she'd love to date thinks she's gone on a killing spree.

Basically, this book was fun. I had a good time reading it and would read more by this author and in this series.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)

So after reading the first book I had hopes for the second one since the first one had so much potential to be a good series!
Maybe I'm in a reading stump but I just couldn't get into it. I couldn't sympathise with or like the storyline. It was a good story, pretty interesting with the introduction of the beta vamps and the issue of the bad blood.

I'm not sure why but it wasn't a series/world I couldn't get myself immersed in. I don't know if its the characters, the love triangle, the "bad guys" etc. I wish I could say more and that I liked it :(… (meer)

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)

I enjoyed the book. It did very well with easing me into the world. Unfortunately I did feel like it was just like any other UF/Paranormal book.

What I really liked about the book (that parts that made it stand out from the other books) was her background story - who she is, who her parents are. I loved how she came from parents that loved each other and her. Their sacrifice made me want to know more about her since there are people out there that want her dead/use her. I'm glad it didn't go into the story of "all powerful father who wants her dead" or anything like that. It was interesting to see that she's half vamp even though I can't really wrap my head around it since vamps are technically biologically dead.

Surprisingly I didn't mind the relationship between Nina and the guys. I did half expect to see a love triangle of sorts. I didn't expect the vamp to love her (very nice surprise and something I want to see develop but with her being bound to him it looks like it'll be interesting). I'm glad the FBI is a berseker and not a were... like so many books like to involve in love triangles. It did put me off that they had instant body chemistry and ready to tumble in bed when there were obviously issues between them and they didn't know each other enough... I'm not a fan of one night stands~

One thing I wanted to know more about but got nothing is the Blood Ops background story. How did DOD know about supernaturals? How did they establish this special ops?
I want to read a story of her growing up, I think it would be great reading her training then in turn we can also learn the special team's history.
