Radium Girls door D. W. Gregory
Came across the play on a slow day at work and read it before the shift was over. It is a wonderful (sad, but wonderful) reflection on the "Radium Girls" and their battle for justice, as well as a warning to even modern audiences regarding the proper treatment of employees, and caution in the face of the unknown. I loved the use of the historical figure Madame Curie in the play, and would love to see the play on stage.
This work dramatizes the plight of women working as dial-painters during WWI and beyond, creating glow-in-the-dark dials for watches using radium-based paint. When they start getting sick and dying, naturally they begin to look at their employer as culpable. This ultimately leads to a big fight, with obfuscation and stalling on the part of the company, until eventually a settlement is reached. By then, many girls (and some men who worked in the lab) are sick, and others already dead. Strong narrative dialogue, coupled with a sparse set, makes this a powerful work.… (meer)
