After a somewhat prolix start, this turned out to be a very good examination of the Bourbon-Habsburg contest of the time, at a point when Madrid (and their Italian clients) were capable of holding their own in a fair fight.

Apart from that, Hamlin has discovered the (mostly) Anglo-American literature of the behavior of men in battle, and does an excellent job of working those insights into this study.

All in all well worth reading.
