Hartsock, John C. Seasons of a Finger Lakes Winery. Cornell Univ. Mar. 2011. c.200p. photogs. maps. bibliog. ISBN 9780801448812. $22.95. BEVERAGES
Everyone who savors the flavor of a fine glass of wine likely has at one time or another dreamt of producing their own. Gary Barletta's interest started when he was but a boy watching his grandfather hobble down to the cellar to use his homemade wine press. Barletta later purchased land in the New York Finger Lakes region and began his own winery. Hartsock (communication studies, SUNY Cortland) follows Barletta and his wife throughout a year to detail the minutiae of what goes into making a potable wine. Organizing his book by season, the author shares vignettes that illustrate the hard work and perseverance required as well as the heartbreak that comes when one tiny mistake ruins a year's output.
Verdict This detailed book is not for every library, but it will be of great interest to those contemplating the winery business, even if just someday to tinker in their basement. [See also Evan Dawson's Summer in a Glass, reviewed above.—Ed.]—Jane Hebert, Orange Cty. Lib. Syst., Orlando, FL½
