Marion Harvey

Written in 1922, this mystery borrows a little from Sherlock Holmes in the character of Graydon McKelvie, the sleuth who solves the mystery. He is an admitted admirer of Holmes and his work.

When Carlton Davies is called to the home of Ruth Darwin late at night, he once again can't help wondering what it was that forced her to marry Phillip Darwin, a powerful banker. Ruth and he and been engaged until suddenly she broke off the engagement. Hinting at some sort of blackmail, Carlton once more takes up the search to find out what it was.

While Carlton is at the Darwin home, a shot is heard and he finds Ruth holding a gun in her hand. She has no memory of what happened and the police immediately decide she is guilty. Carlton knows it can't be true, but how can he prove it?

Carlton and McKelvie work together to sort throught the truths and lies and missing information, find the missing characters who have information, and make sense out of the unusual clues of the case to come to a solution.

The story moves at a good clip and is written in the style of the period, making it a fun escape read.… (meer)
