I liked this, but it was a little weird to me. I understand what fanfiction is, and I've actually read a lot of Jane Austen fanfic, although I don't care much for the original books. This one confused me, though.

First, I thought it was weird that out of all the names the author could pick for the heroine, she used her own name. There is nothing wrong with that, but I read about 300 books a year, and I'm not sure I've ever seen that. It almost takes you out of the story before you get started, as if the author is trying to tell you a fiction story as if it happened to her. Maybe that was the idea since it's fanfic. Maybe it's just me.

The Austen fanfic is the only that I've read, and I fell into that, so I don't know a lot about fanfiction rules or any culture that may be built around it. The Austen fanfic uses the names of the actual characters from Austen books. Ms. Haviland didn't do that here, and she even changed the name of the original book. Perhaps there are rules or laws about copyrights or using the real characters if a certain amount of time hasn't passed? I don't know, but as much as I enjoyed the book, it was very hard to read about characters I've known for years, but with different names. I didn't know this was fanfic when I started it, and by the time I did, I was already into it. I don't understand why the author changed all the names except Ian's.

This is a good book, and I'll add the others to my TBR list, but it helps to know what you're getting into.

Some lovely festive tales

All of these stories are set in late December, but not all are festive. I like a Christmas story to make me long for presents under the tree, and to make me cry. All are romantic, but only a couple fulfilled my desires. Still, most are enjoyable and well -written so you could do worse.

When California chiropractor Jaime finds out his fiancée and business partner are having an affair, he decides to go to Alaska to travel the Iditarod Trail by snowmachine, something he's always wanted to do. After he crashes his snowmachine, Jaime is rescued by Wynter, a lady musher, along with her dog sled team. Wynter takes Jaime back to her cabin where they ride out the oncoming winter storm that is coming. They end up finding out that what each other needs is each other. This was a really sweet romance between two likable characters. It was a quick read. I was hoping for a bit more dog sledding, though.… (meer)

Aloha to Love by Josie Riviera
Really enjoyed this story because it follows a woman-Angelina and she's a writer and some of her script needs correcting before they can make it into a movie.
The scientific expert Caleb is on the cruise also and he conducts classes about his career choice. He knows a lot about volcanoes. She takes his classes and he helps her with the script-he playing the male part.
Love that he tells her, when he stops reading his lines, that a guy wouldn't say that. what was written. They improvise and get through the script and then some.
Story also follows Rachel who's pregnant and on her way to meet her spouse who's already on the island.
Love hearing of the events that take place away from the ship and all that is learned on the excusions.
Good holiday romance, more from five others.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
