I love historical fiction that's based on someone's life, especially when it's the life of their ancestor. This book is lyrical and interesting, with a unique insight to life centuries ago for an immigrant and her family. If you're interested in historical fiction focusing on more of a slice of life, you'll love this engaging read.

I haven't read fiction in awhile. This was a refreshing jump back into novels. I've read reviews that compare Hinckley to Flannery O'Connor, and I can see the similarities, though Hinckley is not as dark. Good characters, interesting dialogues and a fun read.

A Hunger in the Heart. Kaye Park Hinckley. 2013. This book received favorable reviews on the Catholic fiction site, but didn’t live up to my expectations. The brain injury has also caused him to be violent-his personality has completely changed. Coleman’s mother deals with her husband by drinking. The plot had possibilities, even though it was predictable, and so did the characters, but they were not developed. She did a good job describing race relations, small town politics, and life if the late forties, but there was no depth. It was a good “Kindle” book to read on the treadmill.… (meer)
