This article looks at the strong local loyalties which underpinned early football teams in late 19th century Victoria. The strength and nature of these loyalties is examined through some case studies including an in-depth analysis of a bitter football feud between the Bacchus Marsh and Ballan football clubs in the 1880s.

A comprehensive survey of books, writing, art, and archival material relating to Australian Rules Football. This book identifies over 2,000 citations, including 1,500 annotated entries written by experts. A wide variety of sources have been survey including books, journal and newspaper articles, magazines, literary works and academic dissertations. Divided into 19 chapters it covers all areas of the game and it's history. More than double the size of an earlier work, Reading the Game, published in 2005, this work includes new topics such as women in football, Indigenous people's involvement in the game, web sources, music and art. These additions enhance the book and reflect changes in the contemporary game.

This work will be an invaluable reference guide for researchers, librarians and collectors.
