The real meat of this book is Holzimmer's outline of Krueger's growth as an officer, culminating in how the general became one of the fathers of modern operational art in the United States Army. The point being is that the great Louisiana Maneuvers that demonstrated Krueger's capacity for flag-grade command were not simply a case of Krueger being carried by the Army's rising generation of field-grade officers; Krueger had too much drive and aggression for that. That demonstrated aggression is probably what allowed Krueger to stand up to MacArthur more often than not, and to temper plans that were driven more by the desperate drive to reach the Philippines before the U.S. Navy's Central Pacific operations rendered an early recapture of the Philippines irrelevant.
As for why Krueger is left with the diminished reputation of being merely a "soldier's general," rather than a consummate professional, part of this is due to the man's desire to spend no more time in the spotlight than necessary, but also due to Robert Eichelberger's bitter and public grudge against MacArthur and the rest of his colleagues in high command in the Southwest Pacific.… (meer)
