Still being very much a novice blogger myself, I figured it wouldn't hurt to check out Ken Howe’s Essential Book Blog. It’s laid out neatly, in a very easy to use fashion. Things are to the point, without being insubstantial. I found that balance nice. I find I do not like technical manuals that get too bogged down with overly complicated instruction.
There are eight distinct sections. The first section discusses the value of book reviewers, be they professional or no. The next section is a crash course in book reviewing, and covers what is looked for in fiction reviews vs. various types of non-fiction vs. poetry. It also contains one of the top lessons for good book reviewing- review for your audience, not personally. Be aware of what different types of audiences tend to look for and enjoy. There’s also a brief introduction to descriptive vs. critical reviews
Part three looks in-depth at the review writing process. It teaches to be unique and develop your own reviewing style, and the best tactics for when the book you're reviewing is truly beyond help. This section helped me put in writing how I see star ratings, what those values are to me. Part four goes over setting up your blog, building a following, how to engage people with various types of additional content, and how to deal with troublesome people. It was here I found links to help set up raffles and the like, which I've started incorporating. Parts five and six cover snagging free books for reviewing, as well as ways to monetise. This helped me work with AdSense.
Part seven are a few final things mostly focusing on ethical behaviour and proper net etiquette. Part eight are appendices with useful information.
If you are considering setting up shop as a book blogger, or if you are already a book blogger, Howe’s book is chock-full of useful information. I bookmarked several spots in my Kindle copy for easy access. I highly recommend this valuable resource!… (meer)
