The author, Lynne A. Isbell, is presenting a theory about how she thinks snakes helped shape our evolution in a large way, particularly in the area of sight and, as a consequence of that, our large brains. Most of the book is highly technical, heavy on descriptions of the different neural pathways in the brain, along with plenty of anthropological and geographical diagrams and descriptions.

The book is basically a scientific paper made into a book for the general population. I can see how a lot of people might not like the work because of all the in-depth technical writing, but if you get through that, which is the first 70% of the book, then she sums-up what she just described.

I really liked it, I think her theory is fascinating and makes a lot of sense. Doesn't mean that it's true, but I think she's on to something. It's also not that long of a read, just over 150 pages.
