Charleston is a picture book of various historic homes and sites in and around Charleston, South Carolina. I have never traveled to Charleston, but I have traveled several times to Savannah, Georgia. The pictures reminded me very much of that city. This probably shouldn’t have surprised me as the cities are only 100 miles distance from each other on the Southern Atlantic coast.

If you’re treasure a city’s quaintness, this is the book for you. The book pictures the unique history of the Charleston. Unfortunately, lovers of history may be a little disappointed as the only narrative associated with the pictures are their titles. A little more history about the pictured sites would have made the book much more interesting for the reader. The author, Antelo Devereux Jr., is a talented photographer who is probably driven more by the historical quaintness of the city than the stories behind the depicted scenes.

After reviewing the pictures, I realized how remiss I’ve been for not having visited Charleston. I often travel from Miami to Boston to visit my grandson but never stop in Charleston on the way. There is no reason for that other than it is too far for our first night travelers’ stop and we’re far north of it before our second. This book’s pictures have captivated me, however, and as a result, I plan on adding an extra few days to this fall’s trip to visit this picturesque city.… (meer)
