At least half of the essay in this book are really funny and, as a woman, I appreciated the insight into the male mind (or, you know, at least the educated, witty, writer-ly male mind). While some stretch the subject of the book pretty far (I mean, can you honestly call a cat or your infant daughter a "woman" who's "dumped" you?) most of the guys tackle the subject head on and relate just what they figured out from failed relationships. I guess the moral of this book is that the best way (the only way?) to change a man is to dump his ass.

What a wit. Found myself giggling on almost every page. Fun read.

I read this book towards the end of 2003. I do remember liking it, and now that I look back, I still think it is a lot better than Colbert's book, which I reviewed here as well.

While humorous, there are some very cringe-worthy moments in this book. Mostly the overemphasis on using r*tard as an insult, and accusing people they don't like of being "secretly gay" (as we know, the worst possible insult to a straight). It just got tiring.

It does give a succinct look at American Democracy, from the different branches of government to the history of the nation. The book helps explain the functions of the executive branch, the checks and balances of the Senate and Congress, and the judicial branch. There is a brief look at the possible future of America. The final chapter consists of infographics covering the rest of the world, and why, in the writers' opinions, it's not worth going.

Even though the book is now dated, being from 2004, there are still some poignant facts through the haze of rude punch-downs and occasional poorly executed jokes. Still worth a read, I think.

I do like how the whole book is laid out like a classic school textbook.

There were a couple of okay essays, but on the whole they were very bland.

Very funny! I read it through, not in small doses like other people said they have and I still thought it was a great read! Jon Stewart & team are truly some of the best comedians who use intelligence, wit & smart humor!

This is suppose to be funny?

a smart-ass run down of American History..... I saw it a a put-down of the American people and a pointed finger at the collective stupidity of many/most (depending which state you are in) of the population.

there are some humorous moments and a smattering of facts.... but this didn't interest me as much as I thought it would.... I was disappointed.

Oy ve! Where did they get this many whack-jobs?

So, I want to tell you, these are Not the type of men I'd be with! They are in no way, shape or form even qualified as mensch. More like, schlemiel...clueless.

What's more is all of these guys are now the pride & joy of their mammalas! All are now very successful comedians! But did I find them funny, well not at all...... I'm thinking, that this book written by men is for men...because I honestly didn't get what they were talking about.....

Do I blame the women who dumped them? Nope not at all, several of the guys were overly neurotic.

And when I looked them all up in Google Images: Oy, I gotta tell you they all have that meshugga look about them, that wild eyed crazy man look like Jim Carey.....

TBC.....

Hilarious from beginning to end. And sadly, there's a lot of truth in here, too.

Very funny audiobook - listening to this brought me many a chuckle. I recommend it as an audiobook even more than as a book. Dan Savage's story was hilarious.

There were some extremely witty pieces in here (John Oliver reading Nick Hornby's intro was a hilarious start.) There were also some really not very funny pieces. Sam Lipsyte's piece was great, I enjoyed Patton Oswalt's ruminations on dating a stripper and Will Forte had a fun tale to tell. But there were some really bad essays as well. Dan Savage talking about how disgusting he found a vagina (I get it, he had to make sure he couldn't play straight, but there was nothing funny and a lot that was sort of hateful in that essay.) Steven Colbert and Bob Odenkirk, (both of whom I love) entered stories which really kinda sucked, and Larry Wilmore's was sweet but not funny. So, this was uneven, but with some moments of brilliance. On audio (each essay read by the author) it makes a largely enjoyable, sometimes stellar, listen to and from the office.

A little dated since it was written in 2004, but worth picking up off your friend's coffee table. Hilarious.

Mildly amusing. I'm glad that I didn't actually pay for it though. He's better in his current venue. I could definitely see him writing a real book sometime, though. He is a very smart man.

I love how this book has a facsimile of old familiar textbook check-out stamp inside the cover. A witty little easter egg. -cg

A collection of short essays on the topic of relationships. They range from flat to funny, but it's relatively free of misogyny.

I'm not sure if I outgrew the Daily Show or if this book isn't very funny...or both. All I know is that I only had a laugh reading this book a few times and the entire time I had the feeling that the authors think they're funnier/wittier than they really are, but it just came off as snarky. Years back, I read some books released by Modern Humorist a few years before this book was published and I couldn't help but think:

A. I wish those guys were still putting out books now.
B. They would have done this better and it would have been hilarious.

I think anything from The Onion also trumps anything found in this book.

Overall, I was underwhelmed by this one...really a disappointment and I won't be keeping it on my shelves.

This was a wonderfully entertaining and informative book! Well written, with humor that makes valid points. Kudos especially to the designers of the book, who made it look so much like a textbook that I had more than one coworker at the lunch table ask me if I was studying!

One caveat for those who are not familiar with Stewart's work (as I was not): This is not a book for the kiddies. It is distinctly R-rated, with lots of use of the F-bomb as well as one page with full frontal nudity (male and female). It would have probably been just as funny without all that, but who knows?

America the book is freakin' hilarious. No, seriously, hilarious. Yes, it points out some failings in democracy and the particular problems with Re...ehem....I mean, partisanship, but this book is also a great testament to the free speech, free media, and the unrestricted access to information by which these jokes were able to circulate. I think that Jon Stewart is a very intelligent man, and, although this satire might offend some, to me, this book is not about the flaws in the system, but the social problems we all must face as human beings living together on this planet. I recommend this read to all of those who want to learn (unfactual) information about presidential nicknames, the real duties of cabinet members, and what hijinks democratic nations will be up to in the future.

Mostly very funny. A humorous slant on the flubs that these men made while learning how to be in a relationship. Contributors are excellent and make this a very enjoyable read. We all make mistakes or choose poorly or...well, basically we all have to learn somehow, and these essays provide a peek into how these men learned.
