The Jewish community of Ioannina has been the centre of the Greek-speaking Romaniote Jewry for several centuries. Through its active presence in Ioannina from the Byzantine era until World War II, it has played an important role in the economic, political, cultural and social life of the city, which constitutes an important part of its history. The documentary entitled: “A Passage in Time”, which was filmed by and will be broadcast on ERT2, constitutes an attempt to highlight the tumultuous history of the Jews of Ioannina. The focus of interest is the arrival and historic presence of Jews in Ioannina, their intra-communal and inter-communal relations, their social stratification, the care for education, the customary life and the influences garnered by the Christian traditions of the region. The documentary also traces the promotion of anti-Semitism in the region and highlights the integration of the Jews of Ioannina into the Greek National State, as well as their participation in the national causes and the National Resistance.
