This is a lovely coffee table book with 300 color plates of the Governor's mansion in the 44 states that have one. The six states that either never had, or no longer have an official residence are discussed at the end. The book is arranged according to the date that the states entered the union.

The book is excellent, but the mansions are mixed. It appears that the USA genius in architecture is staircases, since they are often the most striking feature of mansion. The manisons themselves vary enormously. Some are almost palatial, others look like quite ordinary, if rather large homes. Some have fairly plain exteriors with lavish interiors.
