This was more of an audio story, as the visuals consisted of a few stills of Sugihara and his wife, but mostly stock photos from the war. It is a deeply moving story.

Chiune Sugahara, the Japanese Consul to Kaunas, Lithuania, wrote 2931 transit visas allowing Jewish families (often the whole family on 1 visa) to emigrate to safety. A young Jewish boy, Solly Ganor (Zalke Jenkins), invited Sugihara to his family's Hanukkah celebration and to their surprise, the whole Surihara family arrived and celebrated with them. This was one of the things that helped him to understand to Jewish plight in Europe better.
Many of the Jews who got visas went to Kobe, Japan and many went to the Shanghai Ghetto when too many were in Kobe. Sugihara's government had not given permission for the visas even after 3 requests, so he and his family were in danger for issuing them. At the end of the war his family spent a year in a Russian internment camp in Russia before finally returning to Japan. The Japanese Foreign Ministry told him to resign, although he was only 47 and had served his country well. He worked in supermarkets and other low paying jobs to support his family until he got a job with a trading company in Russia.
Israel wanted to honor Sugahara, but he only accepted a scholarship for his son in Hebrew University. in 1985 he received Israel's highest honor. "He was recognized as "Righteous Among the Nations" by the Yad Vashem Martyrs Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem." Since Sugihara was too old and sick, his wife and son went to Israel to accept for him.
He died in July 2001 at 86 and was finally honored with the "Hill of Humanity" monument in Yaotsu, Japan. His wife died in 2008 at age 94.
Overall this is an interesting and informative biography of a great man and too few people know anything about his life.

In the fall of 1939 Hitler's murderous wave was sweeping through Eastern Europe. In the face of the Nazi onslaught, Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara made a decision that would change his life and thousands of others. With no possible hope for reward and at great risk to his family and career, Sugihara acted on his innermost beliefs and used his diplomatic power to rescue desperate Jewish refugees.

As Japanese Consul to Lithuania, Sugihara defied Tokyo authorities by writing transit visas that were the sole remaining hope of Jews facing extermination. More than 2,000 Sugihara-stamped passports allowed hundreds of families to flee Europe through Russia to Japan and safe havens abroad. Today it is estimated that at least 40,000 people owe their existence to Sugihara?s heroism.

Through unprecedented access to Sugihara's family and their personal home movies, photos, and papers, and interviews with Sugihara survivors and their descendants, viewers will discover an inspiring, little known story of personal courage, sacrifice, and dedication.NOTES: Purchased from the Amazon Marketplace.
