NO OF PAGES: 121 SUB CAT I: Prayer SUB CAT II: SUB CAT III: DESCRIPTION: Jews have a long history - more than double that of Christians. During that time they have worshiped at mounds of stones, at desert altars and movable arks, in two temples, and in synagogues. Each phase has left its mark and message in the Jewish liturgy, especially in the Jewish prayer book. Built out of much of the same material as Christian prayers, Jewish prayers are a mosaic of quotations from the Psalms and the Scriptures that both share. But they are built up into different patterns, and it is this mixture of familiarity and difference that makes them both disconcerting and enriching. Taking the form of blessings, Jewish prayers ask little and are God-centered. Such prayers are especially important in today's world, where spirituality is easily confused with sentimentalism and feeling with faith. Drawn from such sources as the Bible, the Talmud and the liturgies of the traditional Jewish festivals, the collection of Jewish prayers in this volume includes prayers for all occasions - prayers of praise and thanksgiving, meditative prayers, prayers for mercy and blessing. Sabbath prayers, and prayers for daily living. Displaying a spirituality that complements rather than contradicts a Christian's experience of God, this volume is a devotional treasure worthy of careful study by both Jews and Christians.NOTES: Purchased from CBD SUBTITLE:… (meer)
