I grapple with my feelings about stories like this. On the one hand, I despise the whole "women break down and are incomplete without their men" thing - don't get me started on Twilight. But really, I am so drawn to this exact storyline, and I don't know why. It’s like a scab I know I shouldn’t pick but it’s satisfying. I'll have to do some further investigation and revisit this. (3 stars)
Upon re-read in 2019, after moving on and becoming a licensed mental health professional:
Oh hellllllllllll no! Look, I totally get the fantasy that someone will regret hurting you if you “show them” my attempting suicide. But that is some fucked up, toxic, abusive behavior. Hurting yourself to try to force someone back into your life, or even just to “make them sorry” is NOT OKAY. It’s not romantic or passionate, it’s abusive and selfish, and contributes to the myth that people who struggle with depression and SI just want attention. Grow up, go to therapy, and get away from whatever relationship was so toxic that you would even contemplate this. (This is my rant at the heroine)
Even leaving aside the clinical inaccuracies, I just cannot give this more than one star for putting out a terrible narrative that women should hurt themselves and then their men will come running back. IT’S LIKE FEMINISM NEVER HAPPENED OR SOMETHING. (1 star)… (meer)
